My partner, Violeta del Río, has an amazing gift for music and giving context to ideas. I presented her with a reversed tape-delay guitar sample that I had come up with and she naturally took the idea and gave it a home to live in. We both thought that the original sample sounded like rolling water, and she was reminded of her many trips across the strait of Gibraltar passing over the rolling waves that carry you from Spain to Morocco. Her vision added so much to the context of the piece that we kept the idea of traveling across the Atlantic as the bedrock of the piece. The journey begins and ends with a drum motif, the first steps onto the boat and the first steps onto a new land, and everything in between seemingly a dream.
