My grandmother sold her house in 2016 after having a fall that made the whole family worry if she were fit to continue living alone. After much deliberation we all agreed that it might be time to move her into an assisted living residence. The home where she moved to was called New Beginnings. She and I enjoyed the irony of her taking the leap to a enter a new living situation and the place being called New Beginnings, so we would often joke “how’s the new beginning treating you grandma?” And she would answer “I’m beginning again mijito!”. I imagine this piece as the soundtrack to a scene set in a forest where the first light of day begins to illuminate the land. The pizzicato strings in the beginning are representative of all the unseen life that bustles before dawn, and when the electric guitar legato parts enter its as if you’re seeing the first rays of sunshine gleam through the branches.
